New Milestone PS Loop B.V.

FEBRUARY 15TH, 2024 NEW MILESTONE TOWARDS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY FOR THE EPS INDUSTRY

PS Loop B.V. has successfully achieved a major milestone by continuously producing 5 tons recycled polystyrene per week (Loop_PS) from EPS construction waste containing the legacy flame retardant HBCD.

Test results have proven that the Loop_PS remains well below the UTC, the Unintentional Trace Contaminant value of 100 mg/kg HBCD, which was used as flame retardant for EPS/XPS construction applications until 2016. This is crucial as it enables Loop_PS to meet the regulatory requirement for reuse in EPS/XPS construction applications.

Loop_PS is now being converted into new EPS beads by the partners of this innovative project. These beads are then moulded into new insulation boards exclusively by GEC, shareholder of PS Loop B.V.

With this great achievement the PS Loop stakeholders have proven that this technology to remove HBCD from EPS demolition waste is successful and contributes to a circular economy. The pilot plant in Terneuzen is now ready for further process optimizations. This to enable improved efficiency and reduced costs for building and operating commercial scale plants inspired by the the CreaSolv® dissolution recycling technology.
